Better Ergonomics for Driving

Whether you’re driving for five minutes or five hours, following these tips from Dr. Michael Wilson at Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, CA, can spare you a great deal of pain.

5 Tips for Ergonomic Driving

Did you know that how you sit and position yourself while driving can have an impact on your spinal and general health? Whether you’re heading to work a few miles away or taking your family on a long road trip, minding your posture is crucial. To help, Dr. Wilson and our team at Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, CA, share ergonomic driving tips below.

Adjust the Height of Your Seat

Sitting too low means having to lean up or strain to see well. It can also create issues between your hips and your knees, as well as your back. Be sure that your seat is raised high enough that you can comfortably see and so that your knees and hips are aligned.

Rest Your Head

We don’t mean to get so comfortable that you can fall asleep. However, the headrest should be at the proper height so that you can easily rest the middle of your head on it as you drive. This can reduce strain on your neck, shoulders, and upper back.

Support Your Back

Some vehicles are equipped with lumbar support. However, it’s not always at the proper place for every driver. You might need to add additional support to ensure the curve of your back is supported. Additionally, the seat should be positioned between 100 and 110 degrees to reduce pressure on your lower back.

Steering Wheel Placement Matters

Your steering wheel should be positioned so that your eye level is about three inches over it and so that it is aimed toward your chest. Not only does this help you see more clearly without obstruction to keep you safe but also prevents you from needing to stretch or lean over it.

Also, proper hand position on the steering wheel is crucial. It allows your arms to be more relaxed, which reduces strain on the shoulders, neck, and upper back.

It was once taught that your hands should be positioned at 10 o’clock and two o’clock on the steering wheel. However, the NHTSA now recommends nine o’clock and three o’clock.

Don’t Forget the Mirrors

Mirrors are there to help you stay safe while driving. Take the time to adjust them so that you can both see clearly and without having to lean.
