Carrying Heavy Objects

Lower back pain is one of the most common health problems in the world, and with the number of people whose jobs put them at risk for it, there’s little wonder why. We’ve talked in the past about how important it is for office workers and commercial drivers to make sure they’re exercising and flexing enough to maintain strong cores. But at Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, we also treat people with the opposite problem, those who have strained their backs through overuse and acute injuries. Since we all have to carry heavy objects sometimes, we thought we should provide some information about how to do so safely.

Before you move something heavy, you’ll want to prop open all the doors between it and its destination. Make sure you’re wearing shoes with slip-resistant soles and that your clothing isn’t loose enough to get caught in something. Do a warm-up of dynamic stretches that lasts for a few minutes, and grab the object to get a feel for its center of gravity before facing it directly and lifting it. Lower yourself down by squatting, and use your leg muscles to propel yourself upwards.

While carrying something heavy, you want to avoid twisting your torso as much as possible. Carry the object at chest-level, at your body’s vertical midpoint, and when you have to turn a corner, turn your entire body. When you arrive at your end point, slowly lower yourself down by squatting. If you don’t regularly carry heavy objects, you are at greater risk for an injury, so if something hurts or feels wrong afterward, don’t wait for it to get worse before getting it checked out. Our treatments are non-invasive and non-addictive, and it’s better to get minor dislocation fixed before it causes wear on the surrounding tissues.
