Keeping Your Back Comfortable While Traveling

Are you afraid an upcoming trip is going to wreak havoc on your back? Many people experience cramps and neck pain as a result of spending a long time in vehicles. But at Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, we’re committed to helping our patients live healthier lifestyles, and we want to pass along some advice about staying limber while traveling.


When we stay in the same position for too long, our tendons shorten and become stiff. If you work in an office, we’ve probably reminded you to stand up and stretch at least every half hour. The same applies for when you ride a train or airplane, or when you’re in a car. Even if you don’t want to stop driving that frequently, you can still change the position of your hands on the steering wheel to prevent shoulder freeze. You should also keep your feet on a flat surface and position the seat as close to the steering wheel as you can so you don’t have to keep your lower back extended.


There are also things you can do to make yourself more comfortable when seated. Besides using a neck pillow, you might want to keep a small, cylindrical pillow in the small of your back. Keep your neck upright and your head facing forward instead of bent down to look at a screen. And remember to keep your hips aligned by emptying your back pockets before sitting down.
