What is a Subluxation?

If you’re interested in chiropractic, you may have heard of subluxations. These misalignments of the spine are a common cause of not only back pain, but problems in the limbs, neck, and head, as well. Although they may sound scary, the practice of chiropractic is centered on treating subluxations without using methods that are dangerous and invasive. Instead, at Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, we put the body in the best position to heal itself and function without pain or stiffness.

So what is a subluxation? Our spinal cords travel through a canal in the bones of our back, which are called vertebrae. If a vertebra is out of place, we say it is subluxated. An out-of-place vertebra could put pressure on the spinal cord or on the roots of nerves branching off it into the head and limbs. A subluxated vertebra could also put pressure on nearby soft tissues and strain the rubbery discs between the vertebrae, causing them to become painfully swollen and for the swollen tissues to pinch nerves. Besides being painful to the surrounding area, subluxations can also interfere with the nerves’ ability to send messages to the rest of the body, causing referred pain, tingling, and numbness. An impingement in the lower back could cause sciatica; a problem in the neck may cause pain in the head, shoulders, and arms.

A subluxation won’t necessarily be painful at first, as the body adapts to it. But having to maintain stressful positions for a long time will eventually take a toll on the body’s tissues and contribute to chronic back pain. In addition to treating symptoms by means of anti-inflammatory therapies such as massage and electric muscle stimulation, we provide chiropractic adjustments to restore the vertebrae to alignment. These careful, controlled pushes put the vertebrae back in their optimal position, relieving nerve impingements in a manner that doesn’t require surgery or medication.
