Herniated Lumbar Discs

If you’ve suddenly been struck by lower back pain, a herniated disc is one of the likeliest culprits. These injuries are extremely common, and lower back pain causes more missed work days than almost any other condition. But herniated discs are preventable, and they can often be treated through the non-addictive, non-invasive whole-body techniques we use at Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield. If you suspect you have a herniated disc, we hope you’ll consider safe, holistic treatment, and we want everyone to understand the importance of prevention.

Most of the vertebrae are separated from each other and cushioned by spinal discs. These consist of a gelatinous nucleus surrounded by tough, springy, fibrous material, and they provide the spinal column with protection from jostling. We’ve discussed before how the outer ring of a spinal disc degenerates with age, allowing the nucleus to slip out (which is what the phrase “slipped disc” refers to), but it is possible for the disc to be herniated even without degeneration if a person suffers an injury. The spinal discs in the lower back, or lumbar region, are the likeliest to be injured. They’re more mobile than those in the mid-back and tend to be subjected to greater strains than those in the neck, and when they are ruptured, a compressed nerve root may cause pain, tingling, or numbness all along a person’s leg.

Although a person may not feel pain from a herniated disc immediately, they should get a thorough examination if they have recently been in a car crash or felt themselves strain a back muscle. Treatment options include spinal decompression to move the disc’s gelatinous material back into its center, chiropractic adjustments to improve alignment, and soft tissue therapy such as therapeutic massages to reduce inflammation. We also offer electric muscle stimulation for people who are experiencing tightness in their lower backs. But herniated discs are less likely to occur when a person’s core muscles are built enough to relieve more of the load on their spines, and when a person practices proper lifting techniques and posture.
