Weight Lifting

Chiropractic is a holistic approach to pain management. At Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, we use non-invasive, non-addictive means of putting the body in the best position to heal itself, but we also emphasize preventive care and maintenance. Exercise is essential for relieving burdens on the spinal column and ensuring joint alignment, and for most people, that will include weight lifting. But as with all exercises, weight lifting presents some safety issues, so we wanted to discuss its benefits as well as some basic protocols.

Which exercises a person should do will depend on the goals they develop while consulting with a professional fitness trainer, but unless they are currently recovering from an injury, it’s important to exercise every muscle group.  This will help prevent overuse, as it’s inadvisable to work the same muscles two days in a row or more than three times per week. A new weight lifter will start off with modest weights and build up the length and intensity of their workouts slowly, stopping anything that is painful. Workouts should always begin with a five-minute warm up of dynamic stretches and cardio, and also include a five-minute cooldown, and weight lifting should be done with someone else present.

Following proper form is necessary for getting the maximum benefit from a lift as well as maintaining safety. The lifter should exhale on the lift or press, and inhale when lowering the weight back to resting position. They should keep their back straight and avoid twisting their neck. As a person continues to build up their muscle strength, they’ll also build their bone density. This will make them less vulnerable to minor injuries in the future, and more resilient to degenerative conditions. Building bone density is particularly important for older people, so even if weight lifting wasn’t a regular part of your life when you were younger, you can still benefit from it.
