Electric Muscle Stimulation

Chiropractic is a practice that promotes spinal adjustments, but that’s far from the only thing doctors of chiropractic do. At Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, we offer a variety of complementary non-surgical, non-drug treatments for people recovering from musculoskeletal issues. One of our most versatile rehabilitative therapies is electric muscle stimulation (EMS). But since we offer other services that may seem somewhat similar, we wanted to explain what EMS is, specifically, and in what situations it can be used.

When we are injured, our bodies’ soft tissues become inflamed. This makes our cellular walls more permeable to antibodies and prevents blood that may contain pathogens from circulating freely through the body. However, inflammation is unpleasant and often unnecessary, and rebuilding injured tissues will ultimately require a person to be able to exercise. When our muscles rapidly contract, they are pushing blood out, allowing fresh, nutrient-rich blood to flow in. The muscles also produce and release endorphins, which are natural painkillers.

EMS is a means of forcing muscles to rapidly contract. It does not require much preparation from the patient, and many find it tingly. The way it works is that an electric pulse is generated by the vibrating components in a machine, and the pulse is delivered along wires into sticky pads placed on the patient’s body. For this reason, EMS is not recommended for people who are pregnant or who have pacemakers, but it is a common way of reducing pain and swelling in people’s limbs and backs. EMS is often paired with therapeutic exercise to speed up recovery, and athletes may use it as a way of recovering from strenuous workouts even if they’re not injured. It is also used to help people recovering from strokes to re-establish the network of electric signals between their nerves and their muscles.
