Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield offers a wide variety of treatments for whole body health. We provide patients with safe, quick relief for back pain, but what makes the spinal cord significant is how much the whole body depends on it as the mainline of the nervous system. In line with our holistic approach to health, we wanted to explain why Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is something that is more than just a problem in the wrist, it’s a nerve impingement that is affected by posture and could have consequences for a large part of the body.

The Carpal Tunnel is a passageway in our wrists for nerves and tendons leading to the fingers. The nerves that lead to our hands emerge from the spinal cord in our necks and bundle together in the shoulder. They then divide so that one goes into the thumb and first three fingers, with the other going into the pinky. When tissues in the Carpal Tunnel are swollen or the Carpal Tunnel is being compressed, one or both nerves may be pinched. If that happens, pain, numbness, or tingling may radiate along the whole length of the nerve. Although the Carpal Tunnel is not particularly flexible, it is packed tightly enough that not much pressure is necessary for something in it to be compressed, and people commonly incur chronic swelling.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when chronic swelling causes frequent impingements of the nerves in the wrist. It typically develops in people who hold inefficient postures while driving or typing, or who engage in repetitive motions that require them to lift their arms above their heads. Preventing or recovering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome requires a person to engage in proper posture while seated. We can also help patients by advising them in therapeutic exercises to improve their upper limbs’ flexibility and providing them with pain relief such as electric muscle stimulation, and by examining them for other impingements in their necks and shoulders that could cause similar issues.
