Shoes and Posture

A lot of back pain could be avoided if people maintained good posture. At Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, we work to provide patients with the tools they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle, as well as to safely resolve musculoskeletal problems when they occur. Keeping our lower backs aligned requires our hips to be aligned, and for that, our feet have to be supported. This week, we’re going to take a closer look at what people should look for when they’re getting new shoes.

Shoes should be comfortable as soon as you put them on. If they need to be broken in, they don’t fit. But remember when you visit a shoe store that your feet may not be the same size, and you need to get both measured. You’ll also want to get your feet measured in conditions similar to those in which you’ll be wearing the shoe: wear the sorts of socks you intend to pair with them, and if you’ll be wearing the shoes all day, get them in the evening after your feet have spread out a bit from bearing your weight. Avoid shoes that force your foot into a narrow toebox or that don’t support the arch of your foot, but do try to find ones with a bit of a heel.

Shoes for different occupational purposes need to meet different safety requirements, but if you’re looking for a shoe to exercise in, you’ll want sneakers with snug ankle cuffs. For use outdoors, it’s also best to get shoes with treads, so you won’t have to worry as much about jostling your joints even if you slip and catch yourself before hitting the ground. By wearing properly fitted and supportive shoes throughout life, you reduce your risk of incurring foot deformities, meaning that your feet should be able to distribute your weight in a way that allows you to avoid overburdening the muscles in your legs or hips and shifting your lower back sideways to compensate.
