Hamstring Injuries

The musculoskeletal system is best understood as a single unit, in which each part balances others and affects the overall alignment. At Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, our holistic view is the basis for our minimally invasive approach to helping the body recover from back pain. In order for the back to be aligned, the parts of the body below it have to be supportive. This week, we’re going to take a closer look at what happens when the hamstrings are injured, and what leg pain means for the hips and lumbar spine.

The hamstrings are the muscles that run along the back of the thigh. They do not connect directly to the lumbar vertebrae, but they do connect to the bottom of the pelvis. They insert into the sides of the knee and are what allow us to move our legs backwards. Although they are typically strong in athletes, they still tend to be weaker than the quadricep muscles they balance on the front of the thigh, making them vulnerable to overuse injuries. If a person’s hamstrings are fraying, they may notice sharp pains in the back of their thigh and have difficulty putting their weight on the affected leg. This could prompt them to compensate by shifting their weight to their other leg, throwing their pelvis off-balance and pulling on the hip flexor muscles connecting the upper thigh to the lumbar vertebrae.

As with most muscle injuries, the proper response to an acute injury is rest, ice, compression, and elevation. But in order for the hamstring to recover its strength and flexibility, it cannot be allowed to remain immobile for too long. We can provide chiropractic adjustments to the lumbar vertebrae if a patient has incurred a subluxation. As for the hamstring itself, we can reduce inflammation through means such as electric muscle stimulation, which also reduces workout recovery times in people undergoing physical therapy. We can also break up scar tissue by applying therapeutic ultrasound, allowing the hamstring to recover its full range of movement.
