Treatment for Spinal Spurs

Bone spurs are a common development as people age. Although they may sound intimidating, they’re not always harmful, and they can’t always be prevented. However, there are times when a spur on the spinal column may be contributing to a person’s back pain. In those cases, we at Kosak Chiropractic work to provide pain relief that doesn’t rely on surgical interventions, but which helps the body to recover from issues such as misalignments that are causing the spur’s development.

Our bones are alive and always growing. Spurs are rounded bits that develop in places where bones are subjected to unusual amounts of wear, including where vertebrae form facets to each other and where soft tissues connect to vertebrae close to the discs in between the vertebrae’s main bodies. The facet joints are usually shielded by cartilage, but when a person has osteoarthritis, the cartilage breaks up, and the bones rub against each other, prompting the growth of spurs. When a person has degenerative disc disease, their discs bulge outward, putting pressure on the nearby soft tissues and likewise prompting the growth of spurs at sites of irritation. People who have one type of spur often have the other, as well. The result may be a dull pain or compression of a nerve root as it exits the spinal cord, causing pain or numbness along the nerve’s length.

Surgical removal of spinal spurs is usually not necessary. Instead, treatment would focus on correcting subluxations that are contributing to the erosion of cartilage and increasing the strength and flexibility of the muscles that connect to or pass over the vertebrae. In addition to chiropractic adjustments to relieve pressure on facet joints and spinal discs, we provide patients with advice on posture and therapeutic exercise. With stronger core and back muscles, they won’t be as dependent on their spinal joints to bear their weight and won’t subject them to as much spur-inducing stress.
