Pulled Back Muscles

If you’ve suddenly felt a flare-up of pain in your lower back, and you’re still experiencing moderate pain days later, you may have pulled a lower back muscle. The good news is that this sort of injury can usually be treated without the use of drugs or surgery. The bad news is that it may recur if you have a structural problem, and that there are other injuries that can result in similar symptoms. If you struggle with lower back pain and suspect you pulled a muscle, don’t hesitate to visit Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield. Our chiropractic care team will help you find answers and recover in a way that allows you to build your resilience against future injuries.

Pulling a muscle means stretching it too far for it to go without fraying. This is called a “strain” and can also happen to tendons, while the same thing in ligaments is called a “sprain.” Although pulling a lower back muscle may be an acute injury, chronic overuse can cause the muscles to slowly fray over time, making the remaining fibers more vulnerable to rupture. When a muscle frays, it triggers the immune system’s inflammatory response. This causes the muscle to swell up with blood, restricting the flow of pathogens and other potentially harmful substances but leaving it stiff and sensitive. The inflamed muscle may also cramp and spasm.

Although inflammation can deter a person from continuing to overuse a damaged muscle, gently exercising it is necessary to restore its strength and pump in fresh blood containing the nutrients it needs to heal. We provide therapeutic massages to help safely stretch recovering muscles and can coach patients on which therapeutic exercises are safest for them. We also provide chiropractic adjustments, as needed, for vertebrae that have been misaligned by shortened connecting muscles or that may be contributing to a muscle’s strain.
