Hip Alignment and the Lower Back

If you’re suffering from lower back pain in or around Fairfield, CA, Dr. Michael Wilson at Kosak Chiropractic can help determine the root cause and provide effective treatment.

Anatomy of the Hip and How It Relates to Back Pain

Lower back pain is known to be caused by several things, but many people are unaware that it can stem from a misalignment in the hips. To understand how, it’s important to understand how the hip and back are connected.

The lower back, otherwise known as the lumbar spine, runs from beneath the rib to the upper buttocks. It consists of a curve called lordosis, which helps to evenly distribute the weight of the upper body, reduce the stress of the lower spine, and more.

The lumbar spine is also made up of five vertebrae and discs, as well as joints. All of this is made to control movement and absorb the shock of those movements. Additionally, the lumbar spine is surrounded by muscles and ligaments that help stabilize and support the spine.

Moving to the bottom of the lumbar spine, you find the SI joint or sacroiliac joint, which connects to the hip bone. The hips are made up of bones, ligaments, muscles, and cartilage that support movement and stability. The hip joint is responsible for connecting the femur and the pelvis, which is basically the foundation of the spine.

When the hips are in alignment, the pelvis, lumbar spine, and muscles can all function properly. However, when there is a misalignment, it impacts the pelvis, causing it to tilt. As it tilts, it causes the natural curve of the spine to increase, putting unnecessary pressure on the muscles and joints.

How Can a Chiropractor Help Back Pain in Fairfield, CA

Back pain, including pain caused by hip misalignment, can be effectively treated through chiropractic care. Dr. Wilson at Kosak Chiropractic offers several treatment types to help you achieve relief, including those listed below.

  • Adjustments: An adjustment helps to keep all vertebrae in place and take pressure off of surrounding components.
  • Therapeutic exercise: A misalignment can be caused or impacted by weakened core muscles or tension. Therapeutic exercise helps to relieve tension and strengthen supportive muscles.
  • Lifestyle adjustments: Depending on the cause of the misalignment and precise pain, Dr. Wilson will recommend targeted lifestyle adjustments that can include weight loss, diet and exercise, ergonomics, and more.
  • Custom orthotics: Custom orthotics are often necessary to create the most effective support for your feet, spine, and joints throughout the body.
