Treating and Preventing Back Spasms

Back spasms are extremely painful and debilitating. When they get so bad that they interfere with your ability to work and do your normal daily activities, it is time to get help. Dr. Michael Wilson of Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, CA, provides treatments that can bring relief. He also serves Vacaville and surrounding communities.

What is a back spasm?

A back spasm is a sustained involuntary contraction in the muscles in the back. They can range from a minor twinge to a crippling Charley horse type tightening. They usually come on suddenly, and you are not able to relax the muscles. Back spasms are not uncommon, about 85% of people in the United States will suffer from them at one time or another. Most back spasms originate close to the spinal column, causing severe pain in the sufferer.

Causes of back spasms?

Back spasms can be caused by poor posture that can result from sitting too much, not enough physical activity or having weak core muscles. Injury to the back muscles, tendons or ligaments is another common cause. This can come from lifting something that is heavy incorrectly, repetitive motions, sports injuries or auto accidents. If you don't drink enough water or have a diet that is deficient in potassium or calcium, this can also cause back spasms. Arthritis in the back or a ruptured disc are also some of the major reasons for back spasms.

Treating back spasms

As soon as you feel the first twinge in your back, apply ice. This can help with the spasm and any inflammation that results from an injury. After that, heat can improve circulation to the injured area. Therapeutic massage is a great way to get tense and spasming muscles to relax, relieving the pain.

Electrical muscle stimulation can help. In this treatment, electrodes are placed on the skin and electric current is passed into the muscles. This causes small contractions which tire the muscle, and allow it to relax. Spinal manipulation is used to treat almost every back condition and back spasms are no exception. By realigning the spine, pain relief can be achieved.

Preventing back spasms

To prevent back spasms, get enough physical activity, drink plenty of water, and when lifting, use your legs not your back. Work on your stomach muscles to help support your back and take supplements that include calcium and potassium if your diet is lacking.
