Sciatica can cause a lot of disruption in your daily activities and the pain can take over your life. Dr. Michael Wilson of Kosak Chiropractic in Fairfield, CA uses a whole body approach which means his goal is to free people from pain while improving their quality of life.
What is sciatica?
The lengthiest nerve in the body is the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve begins in the lumbar region of the back and travels over the buttock down the length of both legs. It is a lot of nerve to get irritated. When it does get unhappy it can make your life pretty miserable.
Symptoms of sciatica
The symptoms of sciatica are pain. The pain can be a burning pain, a shooting pain, a throbbing pain, a nagging pain, and numbness or tinging in the lower back, buttocks or legs. The pain is normally only in one leg at a time, but it is possible to be in both legs at the same time.
Causes of sciatica
Sciatica is caused by pressure of the sciatic nerve. The most common reason the nerve gets compressed is from a herniated or bulging disc. Many things can cause the disc issue including being overweight, performing repetitive manual labor, and having a weak core. Just getting older is a contributing factor to sciatica.
Treatments for sciatica
Sciatica is a very treatable condition and chiropractic care is particularly effective in providing the relief you are looking for.
When your spine is out of alignment, many different things can cause pain, including sciatica. Correcting the misalignment can help take the pressure off of the nerve and this relieves the pain.
This treatment uses a state of the art computer program to provide stretching and twisting motion to the spine on a specialized table. The treatment allows the vertebrae to separate and the disc to be pulled back into its correct space. Once it is back in, the nerve is no longer compressed.
Massage therapy is a complementary treatment that relaxes the muscles and allows other treatments to work more effectively.
Therapeutic exercise can be very effective in maintaining the other treatments you may receive. You will be able to continue to be pain free by exercising at home.
Therapeutic ultrasound uses soundwaves to promote healing at the cellular level. It has been shown to be effective with sciatica.
